VII REPORT ABOUT CIVIL SERVICE IN ITALY

The last 15th of December the CNESC (Conferenza Nazionale Enti per il Servizio Civile) presented in Rome the “VII Report about the Civil Service in Italy”.
The CNESC with the collaboration of the Institute of Social Research accomplished an entire analysis finalized to the evaluation of the Civil Service’ s activities in their structures.
The analysis pertains to different kind of information that run on the number of the projects, the number of the volunteers, the amount of the human resources directed to the Civil Service and which are the most require typology interventions.
During 2004 more than 10.000 young people collaborated with the CNESC; the sectors that have mostly interested the Civil Service have been the assistance, Civil Protection, environment, cultural and artistic resources, education, cultural promotion and Civil Service abroad.
The relationship of this year shows an investigation on the volunteers who did the Civil Service in 2002 in the CNESC’s structures; the aims of this investigation are to analyze the self-evaluation of this experience and to amount the human, educational, professional and occupational “relapses” after two years. The judgment of the volunteers is on the whole positive. The carrying out of the Civil Service allows to continue the University studies but the value-added of this experience is the civil and human growth. In fact, most of these young people consider to develop their capacity of confront with different kinds of situations and with other people.
The Service has an important role for the initial approach with the work: the 78% of the interviewed would advice this experience to other persons. Very often most of the young people are introduced in the same sector of activity in which they did the Civil Service; generally in the North East the volunteers remain to work in the same agency where they did the Service, in the Centre instead the young people often are introduced in local authority and in the South of Italy they generally find a job in a private company.
